Disruptive technologies

The term “disruptive technologies” gets tossed around in the parlance of tech.  Clayton Christensen’s excellent book The Innovator’s Dilemma sums it up well with the quote:

… disruptive innovations were technologically straightforward.  They generally packaged known technologies in a unique architecture and enabled the use of these products in applications where magnetic storage and retrieval previously had not been technologically or economically feasible. (emphasis added)

We will have to be mindful of these characteristics and how simply, yet rapidly, disruptive innovation can act.
